In between the physics.

Here's a cliche: life is full of ups and downs.

A cliche because it's true. What we can demonstrate in physics with acutal objects is paralleled by our life experiences on a different scale of time.

Those 'ups' and 'downs' can be identified as isolated events.

Get a promotion. Lose a job. Heartbreak. Fall in love. A loved one gets abused. A loved one finds love.

But what about the in between? What about the time between those isolated events; the time which really comprises the majority of our existence. Why is there no cliche for all that time? Why is the cliche not, "life is full of ascents and descents" ?

It's hard to define the in-between. Maybe because it's always changing.
